Room 10 Maths

Welcome back to Term 2 2017!

This term we are focussing on problem solving and multiplication and division.

Walt: Problem solve
Success Criteria:
I can...
  • Read the problem and understand it
  • Plan
  • Do the problem (choose a strategy)
  • Check my answer with a buddy and share my thinking with the group.
We are also using posters to show our thinking:
Example of a word problem:
Harlow owns 15 pairs of socks. How many socks does he have in total?
We know there are 2 socks in a pair so 2x15 (2 groups of 15) = 30.

Walt: divide and share equally.

We read in class the story 'The Doorbell Rang' by Pat Hutchins.

Word problem: Mum bakes 12 cookies and there are two children - how many is each child going to get? If there are four children how many do they get each? If there are six children how many do they get each?

Here are some photos of us solving the problem....

Welcome back to Term 2 2016!!

We will be focussing on Addition and Subtraction to begin with and then move onto Multiplication and Division later on in the term. Later in the term we will be covering measurement.

Welcome back to Term 2 2016!!

Stage 4  Advanced counting (End of year 2)

Walt: solve multiplication problems by skip counting in 2s, 5s and 10s

Stage 5  Early additive part-whole (In year 3 and 4)

Walt: solve multiplication and division problems

Success Criteria: I can....skip count in 2s, 5s and 10s, I can use the doubling additively

eg: I have 6 baskets of apples, each basket has 15 apples in it. How many apples have I got altogether?

15+15 = 30      30+30 = 60      60 + 30 = 90

I have 24 lollies. I have to share these between 4 people. How many does each person get?

½ of 24 is 12 and ½  of 12 is 6

Or by using trial and improvement with addition

Welcome back to Term 1 2016!!

We have lots of exciting maths to learn - watch this space.....

Term 1:
Geometry - Week 3 and 4
Addition and Subtraction, Algebra Number patterns - Week 5-10

Number knowledge
  • know the forward and backward counting sequences of whole numbers to 100
  • know groupings with five, within ten, and with ten

  • apply counting-on, counting-back, skip-counting, and simple grouping strategies to combine or partition whole numbers
  • use equal sharing and symmetry to find fractions of sets, shapes, and quantities
  • create and continue sequential patterns by identifying the unit of repeat
  • continue number patterns based on ones, twos, fives, and tens.
  • apply basic addition facts and knowledge of place value and symmetry to:
  • Combine or partition whole numbers - for example 8+4=__ change to 10+2=12

Please keep practising your basic facts to ten and twenty with accuracy and speed. You should also keep learning your times tables and know your doubles and halves off by heart - for example:

5+5=10
6+6=12
7+7=14
8+8=16
9+9=18

Welcome back to Term 4!!

This term we will be looking at and covering a range of different topics this term.

Week 1 - Measurement - Telling the time in particular
Week 2 - 4 - Geometry
Week 4 - 5 - Multiplication and Division (problem solving)
Week 6 - 7 - Fractions
Week 8 - 10 Addition and Subtraction (problem solving)

Please keep practising your basic facts to ten and twenty with accuracy and speed. You should also keep learning your times tables and know your doubles and halves off by heart - for example:

6+6=12
7+7=14
8+8=16
9+9=18

Welcome back to Term 3!

  • WALT:
  • identify the symbols for halves, quarters, thirds, fifths and tenths
  • Name the fractions correctly
  • find the fraction for shape, length and a set.

For some practice go into Johnnie's Maths page and click on Fractions.

Multiplication and Division - Term 2

WALT: Display and show multiplication in different ways.
Success Criteria: I can......
Show it as repeated addition, on a number line, in groups and in an array.

Algebra - Term 2

Over the next few weeks we will be focussing on Algebra (Patterns and Relationships).  We are still going to be using the problem solving approach but we will be looking at how to create and continue sequential patterns, and how to find the rule for the next member in a sequential pattern. Below are some photographs of some problems we were working on in the classroom. We really had to stretch our brain muscles.

Problem Solving - Room 15

In maths we have been focusing on word problems.
We Are Learning To: solve word problems in maths

Success Criteria:

  • Read and understand the problem
  • Choose a strategy
  • Solve the problem using this strategy
  • Explain your thinking and show your working
Here are some photos of us in class......
